Another dated, vintage roadside motel in California gets a makeover, this time in the spa-centric town of Calistoga. The new owners fell in love with the tiny 1940’s roadside motel (formerly the Sunburst Calistoga) perfectly placed at the head of the Silverado Trail, in the heart of California’s most scenic wine region. They cleaned her up and gave her new life as the Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa—an epic ode to the Great American Road Trip of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and the spirit of exploration it evokes.
According to Dwell magazine, “New York-based design firm AvroKO took on the project, imbuing the 50-room property with nostalgic flair inspired by that cultural mainstay, the cross-country road trip, and a modern spa that boasts three mineral pools fed by geothermal hot springs.”
The new lodge comes with a manifesto that asks you to leave your pretention at the door, but do bring your dogs. The owners also support local artists, makers and chefs, something we at Golden State can get fully behind. In the future, expect a new restaurant and bar on property as well. In the meantime, if you stay mid-week, you can enjoy a complimentary tasting for two at Calistoga’s Von Strasser Winery & Lava Vine Winery, just behind the lodge.
Rates start at $209 per night. Check it out here.
